It took me around five hours, and that included lunch at Ilam Hall and lot of stops for bird-watching. For some reason, although this is marked as a footpath, the metal gate is locked! Shortly after exiting Halls Dale but before reaching Stanshope turn right along a footpath signposted Milldale towards Pasture Lane (track). On a beautiful summers day, these are really popular, hopping across the river. Turn left and walk along the road for 100m. Go over the stile heading in the same direction to meet the wall coming down from the summit of Baley Hill. I ended up following the main route to Milldale as was unsure where I was going to cross the river and very glad as there wasn't another bridge further down! After crossing the Dove the walk continues through Hall Dale and onto Milldale where tea and cakes or perhaps a hot pasty is the order of the day at Pollys Cottage. Turn left up through Halls Dale.
